Devastating Fire in a City Slum
Staff Reporter, Dhaka, June 4: A massive fire broke out in a densely populated slum in the capital at around 8:30 PM last night, leaving thousands of people homeless. According to local residents, the fire spread rapidly through the closely packed houses, most of which were built with bamboo, wood, plastic sheets, and tin.
At least three people were killed and around 45 others were injured, mainly from burns and smoke inhalation. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Preliminary reports suggest that nearly 400 shanties and small shops were destroyed in the blaze.
Twelve units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene. However, narrow alleys and limited water sources made firefighting difficult. After nearly four hours of effort, the fire was brought under control.
Although the exact cause remains unclear, officials suspect an electrical short circuit or a gas cylinder explosion. Temporary shelters and relief assistance have been arranged for the affected families.
